A short test drive will not reveal most mechanical problems — a slipping transmission under load, a slow coolant leak, or worn suspension components can all stay hidden during a 10-minute drive around the block.

An independent pre-purchase inspection checks the vehicle's mechanical condition, fluid levels, and anything that needs attention soon, and gives you a plain-terms summary you can use to negotiate or walk away. It is a small cost next to the price of the vehicle itself.
